Peter Garaj was born in the former country of Czechoslovakia where he attended and graduated from Bratislava’s University of Economics. Peter’s bold determination and love of the mountains led him to a successful career as an international downhill ski racer, his last ever race, and also first visit to America, was in Aspen, Colorado. It was in Aspen that Peter married and began his family. After moving to Florida Peter’s wife sadly passed away leaving him with two young daughters, this provided the catalyst for Peter to begin his career in the arts. The original of Lichtenstein’s 1963 painting, Drowning Girl, read, “I don’t care! I’d rather sink– than call Brad for help!” In this unique 60 x 40 inch chromogenic print by NY photographer Alex Guofeng Cao, the speech bubble has yet again been altered, this time to evoke a sense of frailty in the pop artist’s once strikingly independent and humorous female subject. Alex Guofeng Cao is best known for his large-format portraits of popular cultural icons. On closer inspection, however, it becomes apparent that the sitter is composed of a constellation of tiny repetitive images - each iconic in its own right and each very slightly different from its neighbor. This "mosaic" of tiny images creates a playful dialogue with the main portrait.
Posing with a look of pure inspiration (or devious intensity), Steve Jobs is naturally contrasted with another 20th century revolutionary, Neil Armstrong. In this elaborate photomosaic by Alex Guofeng Cao, repeated images of the first man on the moon meld together to produce an icon of the personal-computer-age, a wonderful combination that exemplifies some of the most profound pioneers of the 20th century.
