Black Forest Dogs – How to collect them

Black Forest Dogs – How to collect them

It is no secret that we at Daniels Antiques are passionate about “Black Forest” dog carvings.  We bought our first dog carving over 20 years ago and haven’t looked back since! In this blog, I will give you a brief history on these skillful dog carvings, followed by a guide to collecting them, and, finally, where to look for these ultra rare pieces.

The earliest Black Forest carvings focused on working dogs; the dogs were carved in packs, chasing stags or wild boars. I’ve also seen some early carvings of dogs stood alert or by their master’s feet. As the years progressed, the dogs themselves became the main focus of the carving. A mother dog with cute restless puppies, or a male dog resting peacefully. The dog groups have become the most desirable pieces to collect.
