An overview of antique English and French cabinet furniture
The word cabinet applies to all forms of antique furniture. Carpenters in England who specialized in furniture making often are referred to as cabinet makers.
A typical pieces of antique cabinet furniture might be a side cabinet. Such cabinets were made in various woods - mahogany, oak, or walnut being the most popular. These elegant items of antique furniture often comprised of an arrangement of drawers and doors ideally suited to dining rooms for storage and serving, or for a living room for display purposes. Another type of cabinet is a corner cabinet. The name gives it's purpose away, but such pieces could be freestanding or made to hang on the wall. Another popular cabinet piece is a credenza. These often have center glazed doors or glazed doors at the end making them very well suited for displaying collectibles. This type of antique credenza was very popular in the Victorian period when collecting of souvenirs really started to become popular. Another example of a cabinet piece could be a gun cabinet. These pieces more often than not were seen in country homes where hunting was almost part of daily life. The finer of these cabinets were often richly carved and decorated with exotic woods or animal horn.
As the 19th century went on and souvenir collecting became more popular, cabinets especially made for the collector became available. This type of display cabinet was made with a simple open shelf designs or in more elaborate forms with glazed doors often fitted then with gilded bronze mounts as in those produced in France by Linke. In England in the mid to late 19th century such companies as Edwards and Roberts, Gillows of Lancaster, Holland and Sons, Collinson and Locke were well-known makers of fine cabinets. Nowadays the demand is growing for museum display cabinets, simply made, but of the highest quality. These type of cabinets show off what is inside the cabinet, while keeping the item protected.
Our antique French cabinet inventory contains many lavishly decorated cabinets often made more for the beauty of their inlay and parquetry work plus finely detailed ormolu mounts than for their functionality.
