An overview of antique breakfront, bureau and open bookcases
Period antique bookcases come in many variations, the most common being the simple antique bookcase usually with open shelves that you can adjust. French and English bookcases of this type are easy to source. Another style of antique bookcase is one with glass doors, sometimes referred to as a breakfront bookcase. This type of bookcase was usually English and was made in the 18th and 19th centuries during the Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods in a variety of woods such as oak, mahogany, walnut, rosewood. The main factor in the choice of wood being that the cabinet was very sturdy, as books are very heavy items. Sometimes the bookcase was used in combination with a desk and this was known as an bureau bookcase or secretaire bookcase and usually these had 2 doors on the top for books and a combination of doors or drawers beneath. Smaller bookcases often were made to revolve hence the term revolving bookcase. These had to be rather small as again the weight of the books could be a problem. Pairs of antique bookcases were very rare but occasionally, Daniels Antiques gets a fine pair in stock. The furniture manufacturer Gillows is one of the best known makers for producing pairs of bookcases.
