An overview of antique mirrors
Antique mirrors have always occupied an important place in the home. Glass/mirrors first came into English homes in the mid 17th century. The style of the mirror frame on most occasions followed in the same style as the furniture of the day. Mirror plate was very difficult and expensive to manufacture in the early days and so very early mirrors tend to be of smaller size.
Gold leaf on elegant mirror frames is mostly the norm. A gilded mirror lifts the colors of everything in a room. A great example of this type of mirror were those designed by Chippendale. His mirrors were profusely carved with naturalistic forms, "C" scrolls, and often birds that would adorn the top of the mirror. As a general rule of thumb mirrors that hang horizontally are known as landscape mirrors, whereas vertically hung mirrors are known as portrait mirrors.
Daniels Antiques has a large stock of 18th and 19th century mirrors from Georgian, Regency, William IV, and Victorian periods.
In the early 18th century, mirrors were not always fully gilded. Often such antique mirrors would use walnut with parcel gilt highlights on the profusely carved crests or bases. Girandoles are mirrors that had scrolling arms that held candles. The candlelight would reflect off the mirror surface to create a wonderful ambiance in the room.
Even in today's hi tech world there is something magical about the charm and character of an antique mirror, especially one that is reflecting soft candlelight in a setting such as a dining room.
